On July 1, 2020, Public Act 101-0221 amended the Illinois Human Rights Act (IHRA) requiring Illinois employers to provide sexual harassment prevention training by December 31, 2020, and annually thereafter. Restaurants and bars were to establish and disseminate a written policy on sexual harassment prevention training and provide “supplemental” sexual harassment prevention training. The IHRA applies to every employer with one or more employees working in the state of Illinois.

The IHRA has developed a  model training program that is available to employers and the public at no cost. This is a do-it-yourself program with a certificate at the end to print and keep on file as proof of completion. The IHRA also offers complimentary web training courses through their  Training Institute. Employers may develop their own sexual harassment prevention program as long as it equals or exceeds the minimum standards for sexual harassment prevention training outlined in Section 2-109(B) of the IHRA.
